Oscar Re-Cap / Helena’s Best-Dressed Picks

Hello All!

Well, the Oscars have come and gone.  Unfortunately I was trying to do homework and laundry at the same time as I watched them, but I still got to see the majority of it…

Of my predictions, I got 13 right and 6 wrong.  But to be fair– the six I got wrong were not major categories– art direction, costume, documentary feature, editing, sound editing and visual effects.  I got all the major winners right.  That’s what happens when the Academy Awards have become so commercialized and predictable.  ‘Tis a shame, but only because I really didn’t want The King’s Speech and The Social Network to do as well as they did.  Wouldn’t you rather see nice guys win (127 Hours) instead of pretentious assholes (The King’s Speech, The Social Network)?  Come on, American public.  Root for the good underdogs :)   I guess Colin Firth’s character wasn’t that bad, but he was still a rich royal… I’m all about the no-chance-in-hell underdogs: Slumdog Millionaire, Inglourious Basterds, Invictus, etc.

Anyways, I think they did a FANTASTIC job with the Oscars this year.  Anne Hathaway and James Franco were awesome, even if he did look completely stoned out of his mind the entire time.  I loved the best feature compilation they did this year at the end of the show (instead of how the usually just play a short spot for each nom before every commercial break).  I also appreciated the fact that the best actor and actress nominees didn’t spend quite as much time brown-nosing each other as the have in the past few years.  And I LOVED the “best autotuned song” joke compilation.  Especially the “Does he own a shirt?” Twilight 3 song.  Fantastic.

To my straight male readers, you can stop reading here– it will get very boring for you very fast.

As a dress-obsessed lady, one of my favorite parts of the Oscars are the fantastic outfits.  Here are my top five picks for this year (including an honorable mention):

NUMERO UNO: Mila Kunis (Black Swan) — I am obsessed with this dress.  The color is stunning, the lace is stunning and the cut is FANTASTIC.  They should have given her an award just for her dress.

NUMERO DOS: Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit) — Absolutely stunning style.. and she’s like 15.

NUMERO TRES: Natalie Portman (Best Actress winner for Black Swan) — She is pregnant and she still looks this beautiful… crazy!  I love the color.

NUMERO CUATRO: Halle Berry — Not a big surprise, everyone knows Halle looks great at the Oscars.

NUMERO CINCO: Michelle Williams — She always looks STUNNING.  She is clearly one of the most beautiful women on earth and I love the fact that she can rock such a simple dress and a simple haircut.

HONORABLE MENTION:  Penelope Cruz — I don’t love her dress but you have to give this woman a LOT of credit.  She literally just had a baby.  As in she practically left the hospital and walked onto the red carpet.  I wish I looked this great on my best day, let alone right after giving birth.  Unbelieveable.

Aren’t they an adorable couple?

Well anyway, that’s all for now.  Ironically, I have a lot of acting homework to do before 7 AM tomorrow :P Lame.
